Mystery Of the Cosmos; Episode 1

Episode 1

Through the dense rain forest, a petite figure in a hood ran. The figure jumped from tree to tree, not once slowing down. At some point in the journey, the figure was joined by another which was a bit taller than him. Together, they ran towards their destination. Through the dense tickets, they came across a clearing in the middle of the forest with a hut on it.

They halted their running and removed their hood. Under the hoods were a young boy, aged seven and an older boy, aged around 16. The older boy carried a deer in his hands while the younger boy had a bunch of vegetables in his hands.

"It isn't fair you get to hunt and I get to pick the plants"

"It's totally fair. Picking those plants are more important than hunting. Those are rare herbs that you had to snatch from a magical creatures, you should be proud. I just killed an ordinary deer"

"Hmph, don't try to lie to me. It was just an enchanted rabbit that was guarding them. I killed that tiny thing and dragged it's body along" the younger one said, bringing the body of a huge brown rabbit out of the bloodied sack he had behind him. He tossed it to the floor and the older one picked it up with a chuckle.

"Aeion, Myer, what are you boys still doing out there? It's getting dark. Come on in" a woman shouted from inside the hut.

"Yes mother" they both replied, picked up their harvest and went inside.

The inside of the hut was simple but spacious. There were three rooms in the hut, each with a bed made out of leaves and animal fur. The hut also had a kitchen where the boy went to drop all their harvest. They went into their respective rooms to remove their hoods and change into something they could wear to prepare all they had brought.

Myer, the older son, was the first to come out. He waited for his brother to finish and they came out together. Their mother was a beautiful green haired woman who didn't look a day over 20. She was busy painting a portrait when her two boys entered the kitchen.

"How was the hunt today Myer?"

"I caught a deer.....again. Aeion killed an enchanted rabbit"

"Myer, what did I teach you about patience? If you're not patient enough, you wouldn't be able to go for the big preys. Venison suits us just fine. If there was no hunt, the enchanted chickens in the poultry behind should do just the trick. I know you just want to improve your skills but patience is a critical skill.
Besides, you could kill more than enchanted rabbits at Aeion's age. I don't know what is making you so sour"

"Mother, if you're finished spitting theatrics to Myer, can I paint too?" Aeion cut in. Their mother laughed and stopped what she was doing. She went to pat her younger son's head.

"You can paint my little man, when you're done in the kitchen. Let Myer teach you how to properly skin a rabbit. I wouldn't accept trash like the one you brought to me last time. Do it right and I might even let do whatever you want tomorrow"

"Awesome. C'mon Myer. Let's do this"

Their mother chuckled and continue her painting. By the time she was done, the boys had already started cooking dinner.

"Who are you drawing mother?" Myer asked from behind her. He was wiping his hands on a napkin when he caught a glimpse of the portrait his mother had painted. It was the half portrait of a man he didn't recognize.

"He's a part of my past. Someone I used to know a long time ago"

"Did you love him?"

"In a way, you could say I did. He was like a little brother to me. I taught him how to paint and he was an essential part of my life"

"Do you miss him? Do you miss your life, mother?"

"I do, Myer. Nostalgia is a frequent feeling for me. However, I do not regret my decision to leave that life behind and start a new life with your father. You two are the greatest gifts life has given me. I wouldn't give you two up, even at the cost of the life I once had"

"If one day, we leave the forest to see the world, would you leave with us? Would you revisit your past?"

"Good grief Myer, how did you become so deep? You live in the middle of the forest with your weird parents and bubbly sibling. How did you turn out like that?"

"You said it yourself mother, I have weird parents. Speaking of which, isn't father coming back today?"

"He's on a hunting spree. He wants to catch a huge beast that has been rampaging in the deeper parts of the forest. So, he's not coming back today"

"Damn and he didn't take me"

"I can afford to lose him, not you. He knows that very well so he wouldn't dare. Go check on what you're cooking. You know Aeion is horrible at cooking"

"Yes mother" Myer turned and left.

"Oh and Myer....."

"Yes mother?"

"If I had the chance to revisit my past, I wouldn't take it. I would prefer to spend the rest of my life in the forest. There are somethings too painful to revisit"

"Okay then mother, I wouldn't force you" Myer said with a smile and entered the kitchen. Tia watched him leave and crushed the brush in her hands when he was out of sight. The painting behind her caught on fire and turned to a pile of ashes which were blown out by a strange wind.

She threw the brush away and went to join her children in the kitchen.

Aeion wanted to go fishing. Since he completed the task she gave him, Tia had no choice but to oblige to his request. After lunch, the trio packed up and went to the nearest lake to fish. Myer was in charge of teaching his brother how to fish while Tia painted by the lake side. She wanted to capture the moment.

Aeion bugged his mother so she could join him to fish, making her leave her painting half way. Tia was an excellent fisher so she was hauling them in. She taught her boys a few tricks and after that, they went swimming. It was a happy family memory until Tia screamed out at them to get out of the water.

Aqua blue fire crackled in Tia's hand as she readied herself for a threat. There was a smaller ball of aqua blue flame on Myer's hands as she protected his brother.

"Something's in the water. When I tell you boys to run, run and don't look back" she said with a serious gaze and they nodded.

A black figure shot out of the water and lunged at Tia. It was a huge enchanted fish with rows of sharp teeth. Tia threw the ball of aqua blue flame at the monster fish and jumped away. The fish bellowed in pain and sprayed a geyser of water at her. She dodged it, firing more flame balls at the monster fish.

Myer and Aeion looked at the place where the geyser hit and were horrified to see the land was stripped bare of all signs of life. They moved further away from the splash zone of the battle.

Tia was agile on her feet and was able to bring the monster down. She packed up her painting supplies calmly and handed her catch to her children.

"Myer, Aeion, I want you both to listen to me carefully. My full name is Leratia Uracho and I'm the daughter of a banished noble in Tolhi, the underwater kingdom. The thing is, the king of Tolhi was dead set on making me his concubine so I ran away. It ruined my family. I've been on the run for so long and now, he has found me. If anything happens, run to the house and wait for your dad. If he doesn't come in two days, leave the house and travel to the Kingdom of Ataliya. Find the biggest monastery of Burmi there and look for a scholar named Lesker. He would take care of the both of you"

"Mother, are you going to die?" Aeion asked fearfully.

"I don't know my love. The thing that attacked us, there are more coming. I want you boys to be safe, okay?"

"Okay"

"Good boy" Tia kissed them both on their forehead, giving what seemed like her final goodbye.

Her magix, the aqua blue fire covered her body in seconds and she formed a wall of fire, protecting her children. Just as she predicted, bigger fishes jumped out of the water and started attacking her. It was obvious she was skilled but she was slowly getting overwhelmed.

One of the fishes noticed the children hiding behind the wall of fire and tried attacking them. Tia disappeared from where she was and appeared in front of her children, the geyser hitting her squarely in the chest. She let out a grunt and fell to the floor. A wall of fire rose between her and the monsters, giving her a brief respite.

"Mother.....no" Aeion rushed at her, choking back a sob. The skin on her chest was mangled and she was battered.

"Boys, its time to run" she manages to say.

"Mother, we can save you. Let's go together" Myer says with tears in his eyes.

"I'm sorry boys. You have to go. I don't think I can survive this. I love you boys. Now, run!"

Myer grabbed Aeion and ran. Aeion struggled and screamed but Myer didn't let go. He eventually had to resort to knocking him out to prevent him from alerting the other inhabitants of the forests. When Myer looked back at where his mother was, he saw her unconscious body being dragged into the water.

He bit back his tears and ran home.
