CHAPTER 23

“Giselle, open the damn door” Annie growls from outside.

“Who opens up the door for serial killers nowadays? Not black people I say”

“Giselle, I am also black. Now open up the damn door before I break it down”

“Even better. My neighbors would call the cops for me”

Gabrielle, tired of the back and forth banter between the two female friends, stood up to open the door. The three entered and after greeting Gabrielle, glared at Giselle.

“What? My leg is busted. I couldn’t do it”

Annie raises a brow and just shakes her head. She takes a seat, the other two following close behind. Annie was African American, her skin tone much lighter than Giselle and like her friend, she was also a beauty. But, compared to her other friends, she was short, about 5’4 in height.

Dev was the tallest of their friend group. He, like Matthew, was Asian American. His mother is Indian and his father was from New York. he and Annie were a couple, albeit a weird one. The last person in their friend group and the only white one, Aaron, was on a trip to Dubai.

They had known each other from their high school days, which most people didn’t know in University. Matthew was the only person Giselle spoke to because he was the only one she knew. The others attended different universities but still met up once in a while and their friendship only got better with time.

“Thanks for the drinks, Gabriella” Dev says, receiving a cup of apple juice from Gabrielle.

“It’s Gabrielle, not Gabriella. You should already know this”

“I’m sorry, I’ll get it right next time”

“Hopefully you don’t barge into my house like this next time, Dev”

“I wasn’t speaking to you, Giselle. Shush!”

“How rude!”

Giselle, known to be emotionless and distant was only like this around her friends. As for the only one who knew her illness, it was Dev, her childhood friend.

“So, what happened to your leg?” Matthew asked. He already knew she came in to work in a cast but to see it was different. It looked serious.

“I sprained my ankle and reopened a new wound. It hurts like crazy”

“That sounds horrible” Annie gasped.

“Psh, that doesn’t sound that bad” Dev said, waving her off.

“You’d cry from a paper cut. How dare you?!” Annie accused.

“I’m not that weak. Let me be woman!”

The two kept on arguing but Matthew ignored them and stared at the cast.

“As far as I remember, you didn’t have any incidents recently. Where’d you get the wound?”

“Well…….”

“Giselle, don’t lie to me”

“Do you really want to know?”

“Giselle……”

“Fine. I got a leg piercing”

“A leg piercing?” Annie and Dev asked at the same time.

“Giselle, don’t tell me, is it……. Adam?”

“Yeah. He said it was beautiful” Giselle replied with a small smile.

“Giselle…...what has he done?”

“Matthew, calm down. I’m fine”

“I’m not fine with this! Why must he treat you like this? You did nothing wrong! Nothing!”

“Uh, what’s going on?” Annie asked in concern.

“It’s Giselle. She’s being treated like trash and yet…..”

“Matthew Park. Just stop”

“What do you mean stop? You don’t want them to know?”

“They don’t need to. I can handle this myself”

“Giselle…..” Annie says but eventually goes silent. Giselle was rarely ever strict with her friends, always conceding to them but when she stood her ground, no one could change her mind. Well, no one except Dev.

“Giselle, talk. Right now”

“You can’t make me” she replied with childish stubbornness.

“Oh~~ you want to bet?”
