CHAPTER 24
He stared at her with a cocky grin that only the two of them understood. She finally conceded.
“Tch, Fine”
“How does he always do this?” Annie wonders.
“The only known Giselle bender in the whole universe” Matthew adds.
“Well, I know all her secrets and I’m not afraid to use it” Dev proudly says. An annoyed Giselle flipped him off. She took a deep breath and explained everything from the start. As she started talking, Dev remembered some not so good memories of their childhood.
Giselle wasn’t always anti-social and emotionless as she once was. She was the sweet girl next door who always brought cookies and invited the neighbors out to play. She was beautiful, smart and kind.
Dev was the kind of kid who was ostracized because of his race and his introverted nature. However, Giselle brought him out of his shell and showed him the wonders of her little world. It was the most beautiful and purest thing he had ever seen.
From then on, the two were best friends. They played together, ate together and sometimes slept together. They also attended the same school from elementary to middle school to high school. He noticed nothing wrong when they were still kids but he started to notice something off when they were in the last year of middle school.
Dev was coming out of the class when he bumped into a girl. He and Giselle weren’t in the same class and only went home together so he wasn’t too clear on what went on in the class. He tried to help the girl up and apologize but was given a deadly glare. The girl huffed and walked away.
It happened a few times till he finally confronted the girl and asked why she was treating him like that.
“It’s because you’re just like them”
“Just like who?”
“Cheadle and her friends. Aren’t you her friend too?”
“Giselle is my best friend. If you have a problem with the both of us, it’s best to speak to me about it”
“Best friend? Pah! What do you know? I was also her best friend”
“I don’t think there is nothing wrong with having multiple best friends”
“It must be a guy thing then. You all think with your dicks!”
“Hey! Watch it! I wanted to settle this peacefully but if you want violence, I’ll give you violence”
“You want to hit me?! Go ahead! Go ahead and hit me!”
“What the…..? I’m not going to hit you. Just calm down. I’m sorry I lost my temper. Let’s both calm down and solve this. Shit, don’t cry!”
“I’m sorry too. It’s just, I can’t…….I can’t take it anymore. They’re driving me crazy”
“Relax, err, what’s your name?”
“Catherine. Catherine Denver”
“Right. I’m Devon Pierce. Nice to meet you”
“Nice to meet you too”
Catherine Denver ended up being his first girlfriend and he eventually found out what happened. Giselle and Catherine used to be good friends. Giselle was still as friendly as she normally was except for a big flaw. When things didn’t go her way, she usually forced it and if it still didn’t work, the person responsible for it, she would hate the person.
Her hate usually varied. Normally, she would not just talk to the person but if she was really annoyed, she would make their lives hell. Since she liked Catherine, she ignored her. But what it meant for Catherine was that the other kids in class would ignore her too.
One day, while walking past Giselle’s table, she tripped and spilled the juice in her hand all on Giselle’s body. She apologized but the enraged Giselle just stormed out of the class. Since then, the whale class started bullying her. Giselle didn’t get them to stop but did nothing either, just watched her suffer. It didn’t concern her. Catherine wasn’t her friend anymore.
To be honest, the whole thing wasn’t Giselle’s fault. Things got out of hand and the trauma had started to get to Catherine. The day she ran into Dev, they had spilled dirty water on her and she had to go buy new clothes. It was so embarrassing and she ran into Dev too.
Dev talked to Giselle and got them to stop bullying her. They stopped but she was still ostracized in class. Not even her boyfriend could help her with her depression. When they graduated, Catherine broke up with Dev and moved to another state.
In the summer, when Giselle came over, the two got into a big fight and Giselle stormed out. Feeling guilty, Dev called her house but soon found out that she hadn’t gotten home. He ran out and looked for her everywhere. It was the day Giselle was kidnapped for the first time.
“Dev, what’s wrong? You went pale there” Annie asked in concern.
“I’m fine, just a bit tired. How’s your leg now Gigi?”
“What is up with you? You haven’t called me Gigi since middle school”
