CHAPTER 37
“How dare you?!”
Catherine slapped Giselle. It was only after she had done that did she realize what she had done.
“I’m so sorry. I was just so angry”
“Would you just stop pretending already? You and I know quite well that nobody liked you in class. Nobody bullied you, Catherine. You and I were never best friends. Let me tell you what happened from everyone’s point of view.
From the first time I entered that class, you boldly declared I was your best friend and pulled me around the class. I only put up with your nonsense because my dad said I had to be nice to you. I did not and would never like you.
It’s not like you liked me either. You were just using me to be popular. Everyone put up with you because I did.
The day we fought, you were asking for my necklace. It was one that Devon got me for my birthday. Because you liked Devon and you were jealous, you stole it. You still have it, don’t you? And the day you spilled that drink on me, it wasn’t ‘accidental’, it was on purpose. Everyone knew that and that’s why they avoided you”
“No, that’s not true! I’m not the bad person here, you are! You made them hate me!”
“I can be manipulative sometimes but never have I, for once, lied. I hate liars and barely lie myself. Like I said, no one bullied you.
The first time, you saw a group of girls talking and you wanted to join in forcefully. You shoved someone away and so she shoved you back.
The second time, because everyone was ignoring you, you bought pizza to try to appease everyone. Once everyone ate it, they had food poisoning and the whole class didn’t come to class that day. I also tried the pizza, thinking I would forgive you. I had never been so wrong. Who knew you would be so evil to get back at the whole class? That's why they poured stinky water on you”
“No….you weren’t supposed to eat out of it! It was their fault! How dare they ignore me?! How dare they?!”
“Finally showing your true colors, eh? You know, I tried to tell Dev the truth. I thought he would believe me. You know what, that idiot was hopelessly in love with you? I have been with him for a long time and he chooses you?! Why?! I hate you! I hate you Catherine!”
“He loves me? No….it’s you he loves”
“Yeah, like a sister. He fell for your lies and chose you. Ahh, because you’re mafia, you think you can get away with anything? Mark my words Catherine, I would get my revenge!”
“Shut up! Shut up!”
Catherine left the room screaming. That day, her father started torturing Giselle. She always cried out every time but when Catherine was present, her lips would be sealed. She would only glare hatefully. When no one else was there, she would curl up and cry.
“I was confused then. I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad for Giselle. Those contrasting emotions made the experience quite traumatic for me”
Matthew didn’t know how to react. All the while, he and everyone else had thought Catherine was the victim. Giselle’s attitude was evasive and apathetic so they couldn’t get anything from her. But Giselle was a prideful person. How would she ever share her weakness with someone?
“You…..you’re…..”
“What is it, Dr. Park?” Catherine asked, cocking her head innocently.
“If it’s about Giselle, then she had it coming. The way she treated people was deplorable. She was also so sneaky and manipulative, making sure everything went her way”
“I’ll admit it. Giselle is a person that makes sure the odds are in her favor no matter what. She only cares about her family and would not hesitate to punish everyone who stands in her way. However, that is the admirable thing about her. She is a kind person who loves and gives. She is also someone whom I look up to. I would not allow you to speak this way about her. So, get out!”
“As I thought, she had manipulated you too. I thought you were a professional, Dr. Park. Why are you behaving like this?”
“If you don’t get out this instant, we would have a problem”
Catherine sighed and stood up.
“I don’t know what has you this riled up so I’ll come back later when you’re calm. Have a nice day, Dr. Park”
Matthew’s whole body was trembling. He was so angry. He was a professional through and through but he was also a human being. Who would be alright, hearing that their most important friend had gone through such a thing?
A few minutes after Catherine had left, Ava entered.
“Honey, are you alright?”
“No Ava, I’m not. Are you here to mock Giselle too?”
“Of course not. Just tell me what happened, okay?”
Matthew managed to calm himself and tell Ava what Catherine had told her. In the end, even Ava couldn’t believe her ears.
“Do you understand now? The reason why I told you we could never work out? It’s because it’s not me she likes, it’s Devon. It had always been Devon”
“I...didn’t know. I was always so jealous of her”
Matthew sighed deeply and pet her head.
