CHAPTER 43
The Denvers have a thing for door colors in the order of the rainbow. They kept prisoners in the green room which should normally mean it was a safe place. However, if you were an insider in the Mafia, you would know that it was a deceptive plot, one used to persuade their guests rather than mercilessly torture them.
Call it the room of emotional torture. They were made to wait a long time without being touched and fed once a day. It was a method far more effective than physical torture.
Inside the green room this time, there was a particularly disheveled man. He just sat on the ground at the corner of the room and stared out the only window, whistling a tune.
He would occasionally scribble on the floor but return to looking out the window. This old man was none other than Samuel Denver. He had been there for a few days. He naturally had the mental fortitude to withstand such cruel torture but he was severely worried for his children. They were all capable but with him in captivity, he knew their hands would be tied.
“Sometimes, I wonder if I spoiled them too much. This would be so hard for them. Thankfully, I got her to make that promise. I just hope that she keeps her word. Our family depends on it”
That was the only thing he said in the days he had been brought there. He said nothing more, back to whistling away to pass the time.
A knock on the door stops his whistling. A girl clad in all black leather walks in and shuts the door behind her.
“Uncle” she greets.
“It’s Cat. How are you?”
“You’re just going to play dumb? I kidnapped you, be more shocked. Why are you so confident?”
“You know, I really liked you, Catherine. You were different from your family, smarter than them. I was going to have you in the equal running for the family head as my dad did for me and my cousins. But, when she told me the truth, I had to change my mind”
“She?”
“Yes. The most outstanding woman I met in my aged years. She opened my eyes to new possibilities. An amazing person”
“Her again?! She got to you too?!”
“It was easy to. She reads and understands people with unprecedented ease”
‘Like she did with me’ Samuel thought. He could still remember the last time they saw each other. It was to discuss the documents involving ownership. He was trying to rope her in but didn’t know she came fully prepared herself.
“I think it’s interesting, Mr. Denver, that you’re letting a strange fire burn brightly under your roof”
“What do you mean?”
“Christopher and Catherine Denver”
“How do you know about them?”
“I’ve met them on several occasions. I was quite close to Catherine while I was younger. Seemed like a lovely girl.
You know, Mr. Denver, people refer to me as a psychopath but what about her? A blatant wolf in sheep’s clothing, an absolutely horrid person……”
“Miss Cheadle! I would not have you disrespect my family”
“Of course not, not without evidence. Well, let’s make a proposal. I’ll give Amelia certain information that is useful in understanding who Catherine really is so she can find the rest herself. In return, I don’t want the involvement of the mafia in my hospital. Do we have a deal, Mr. Denver?”
“Wait a minute! What if you’re wrong?”
“I’m absolutely positive I’m right and even if Amelia doesn’t find evidence, it means she is incompetent. Nevertheless, I’ll make a compromise. If she is truly innocent, then, I’ll give the Denver family 50 percent shares. Yes, you guessed right. I’m giving you all my shares”
“You’re quite the gambler, aren’t you, Miss Cheadle?”
“A little. Let’s make it more fun for both of us”
“Alright. But, Miss Cheadle, even if you win, I want you to at least promise me something. When the time comes that I’m not around and my family is in trouble, you’d help them out”
“.........Fair enough. Alright, I promise”
“Then it's a deal”
Samuel stretches a hand forward and Giselle takes it, shaking it.
“I look forward to working with you, Mr. Denver”
The confident smile on her face was so infuriating that he couldn’t get it out of his mind for days. When Amelia finally finished her investigation, the truth was quite shocking to both of them.
Just how messed up was she?
“In the end, I started to make ample preparations to counter you but who would’ve known it would never be enough? I’m just glad she’s helping us”
